Savu Sea Marine Biodiversity Rapid Assessment
Project Leader
Expedition to explore the Savu Sea and monitored shark and ray distribution, reef fish abundance, critical habitat presence and distribution
Strengthening Protection Through Science
This expedition plays a key role in improving the current zoning and management plan of the Savu Sea Marine Protected Area (MPA), where sharks and rays were not included in the original plans. Now, with growing recognition of their ecological importance, there is a clear opportunity to incorporate specific protections for these species, with the necessary data gathered. Thrive conservation, in close coordination with local partners and government agencies, is responding to an official request to help fill this knowledge gap by surveying shark and reef fish populations in the region.

PROJECT LEADER
Sarah Lewis
Sara Lewis is a marine conservationist and manta ray scientist whose passion for nature began in the woodlands of the UK, where she spent her childhood exploring ponds and forests with an innate curiosity for wildlife. This early love for the natural world led her to earn a first-class honours degree in Ecology and Conservation from Manchester Metropolitan University. Sara’s career took shape when she joined the Maldivian Manta Ray Project, marking the beginning of her work with manta rays—gentle, intelligent creatures that have captivated her ever since. Deeply committed to protecting marine life and ecosystems under threat, Sara believes conservation is not just her career, but her calling.
Driving Conservation from Discovery to Policy
The expedition targets remote and rarely surveyed areas of the southern Savu Sea, where there is significant potential for exciting and impactful discoveries. By assessing shark and ray distribution, reef fish abundance, and critical habitats, while also incorporating insights from local communities and long-term residents, the data we collect will directly support conservation action. These findings inform science-based policy recommendations and guide frontline management efforts, ultimately helping to shape a more inclusive and effective MPA plan for the Savu Sea.
