Star Project Thailand
Project Leader
The Stegostoma tigrinum Augmentation and Recovery Project (StAR) is a collaborative conservation effort aimed at restoring healthy populations of Indo-Pacific leopard sharks through breeding, reintroduction, and habitat protection. Initially launched in Indonesia and now expanded to Thailand.
StAR Project
The Stegostoma tigrinum Augmentation and Recovery Project (StAR) is a pioneering conservation initiative dedicated to restoring healthy, self-sustaining populations of Indo-Pacific leopard sharks. The project began in Raja Ampat, Indonesia, where the species had faced a significant population decline. To address this, captive-bred Indo-Pacific leopard sharks were carefully reintroduced into their natural habitats, following rigorous scientific research, ethical considerations, and a comprehensive Population Viability Analysis to ensure long-term success.

PROJECT LEADER
Metavee “May” Chuangcharoendee
Metavee “May” Chuangcharoendee is a marine biologist and Project Manager of the Stegostoma tigrinum Augmentation and Recovery Project (StAR) in Thailand. Specializing in elasmobranch species, May has contributed to several key initiatives, including the Maya Shark Watch Project in collaboration with the Department of National Parks and the Ocean Health Index Assessment during her tenure at the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources. Passionate about conserving marine biodiversity and promoting the sustainable use of ocean resources, May is also an avid diver and nature enthusiast who finds inspiration in exploring underwater ecosystems and trekking through natural landscapes.
Expansion to Thailand
Due to similar population declines in Thailand, the StAR Project has expanded to the region. Led by Ocean Blue Tree in collaboration with WildAid, ReShark, and Thai Sharks and Rays, the project focuses on:
Breeding and releasing Indo-Pacific leopard sharks to build sustainable populations
Utilizing citizen science for photo identification and monitoring
Partnering with government agencies to strengthen habitat protection and restoration
Raising public awareness and fostering community involvement in marine conservation
Through science, policy, and community engagement, the StAR Project aims to restore marine biodiversity, promote sustainable practices, and inspire long-term conservation across the region.
