Protecting Orcas in the Gulf of California
In response to the growing presence of orcas (Orcinus orca) in the Gulf of California and the rise in tourism around them, the Orcas Pacífico Mexicano network has launched a new initiative to strengthen conservation, research, and sustainable management efforts. Backed by both federal and local authorities, 2025 is set to be a pivotal year for implementing science-driven and community-based strategies aimed at protecting orcas and ensuring responsible tourism practices in La Ventana, BCS, Mexico.


PROJECT LEADER
Georgina Saad
With over 25 years in marine conservation, Georgina is a dedicated marine biologist focused on protecting the Gulf of California’s unique biodiversity. As the former head of the WWF-Gulf of California Marine Species Program, she led efforts to study and protect whales, sharks, and sea turtles, working closely with scientists, local communities, and government agencies.
Georgina also champions collaboration across sectors, notably bringing Telcel into national conservation efforts. Her work continues to drive awareness, scientific progress, and sustainable solutions for marine ecosystems in the region.
A Model for Sustainable Marine Tourism
This project sets out to become a national example of responsible marine tourism by blending science, technology, and community engagement. Through collaboration with local stakeholders, it seeks to create a lasting conservation framework—one that not only safeguards orcas but also supports the long-term development of sustainable tourism in the region.
